OBITUARIES

Neil "Pops" Arthur Sampson
11/9/1937 - 1/28/2010

Our dearly beloved ‘Pops’ – Neil Arthur Sampson – entered eternal life on Jan. 28, 2010, following a progressively debilitating illness that extended over the past year.
Neil, the second of two sons, was born in Jamestown, NY, on November 9, 1937 to Laverne and Carolyn Sampson. Neil spent his youth in Jamestown where he led a typically small town upbringing, participating in High School sports and enjoying the carefree adventures of post Depression, post-World War II America.

Shortly after graduation from High School, Neil enlisted in the newly formed US Air Force – a decision that ultimately evolved into a 26 year career that included overseas assignments in Korea, Vietnam, Iran and Alaska. He also served at a variety of postings in the continental United States, earning a host of awards, medals, and special commendations for his exceptional service.

Neil was originally married to Connie Smithson with whom they had three children, son Chuck and daughters Diana and Debbie. After that marriage ended, Neil became united with his second wife and soulmate Yimlamai (Tiem) Heath. For the past 23 years Neil was an ever loving husband and dutiful stepfather, invariably known as ‘Pops’ to Tiem’s three children, Ray, Christine, and Carl.

Even after completing his military service, Neil continued to serve his country as a Department of Defense civilian employee. That phase of his career culminated with a ten year managerial assignment in Northern Italy, a tour ingrained in their collective memory as the most rewarding years of their married life. After retirement from federal service, Neil and Tiem moved to the suburban town of Wesley Chapel, where they spent the final years of Neil’s life..

Neil is survived by his wife, Tiem, his son; Chuck Sampson, Dothan, Alabama; daughters, Diane Lynn Ward and Debbie Lee Wells, both of Abilene, Texas; stepsons Ray Heath and Carl Heath, both of Wesley Chapel; and stepdaughter Christine, Brandon, FL. His extended family includes many grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and in-laws.

Neil's life is testimony to the triumph of the common man. He was a talented and gifted professional, but humble and reserved regarding his personal accomplishments. While he shunned the limelight, he was always steadfast, unassuming, and true to his ideals. He was loved for his loyalty, devotion to family and friends and his wry wit. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Services will be held at Loyless Funeral Home, 5310 Land O’ Lakes Boulevard, Land O’ Lakes, FL. Visitation and services are scheduled for 10:00 AM on Monday, February 1st, followed by interment at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fl at 12:30 PM.
